I have always looked to learn about things from the best information iavailable out in the big world of ours. We have been hearing alot about membership declining and pretty much no growth in player numbers throughout our region. There are a lot of great programs out there being done at the state and course level, but we are still to see any "industry wide" initiative being heavily promoted. Launched by the World Golf Foundation, Get Golf Ready, an US industry-wide adult player development program, recently announced the launch of the facility registration process for those facilities interested in serving as a 2009 host site. Facilities may register either online at GetGolfReady.com or by contacting the World Golf Foundation for registration information. GetGolfReady.com will also serve as a resource site for interested consumers to learn more about the program and to get connected with participating facilities. Cut and paste this link to read the full story - http://www.pga.com/2009/news/pga/01/29/ready/ We would love to hear your thoughts on this subject- What should the industry as a whole be doing to bring new players (not focusing only on the elite) in Australasia? Just went to watch a bit of the Johnny Walker classic. To my surprise when i surfed through the channels i couldn't find it. I then checked the TV guide and no mention of the golf. I was puzzled... I went down to my main TV and turned it on, up popped the golf. Turns out that channel Ten is only showing Thur & Fri coverage on 10 HD! How is golf meant to grow when we can’t even get golf out to the masses. Showing golf on HD is not constructive. Yes, allot of people have HD TVs BUT when we are talking about the whole country you'll find that only a small percentage have HD TVs. Thinking in terms of growing the game I would have thought that Thursday and Friday would be the best time to do this. When you think about it people that are NOT into golf will not watch on Saturday and Sunday. People are busy, do you really think that they will spend their only days off in the week watching Golf? Any thoughts? I also feel it is a bit embarrassing that we have people like Greg Norman, Lee Westwood, Camilo Villegas to the Johnny Walker classic and we can’t even get any of these names to our majors? It all seems a little off to me! I hate to be negative but to me there are obvious things we could be doing to grow the game that we're not, things that should be no brainers. |

Hi Jman I am a strong believer that we need all the golfing governing bodies and other industry entities to band together behind a national approach. This was starting to occur with the Australian Golf Industry Council a couple years ago, but it seemed to have stopped altogether. There is a new person, Stephen Pitt at the helm of Golf Australia and there will be most likely a change in leadership with the Golf Managers Association later this year, so fingers crossed. Our industry is to small here to each do their own thing. The main issue we have is time, or lack of it. You see bowls, 10-pin bowling, skiing, and tennis have all had different changes in recent years that have attracted a new base of users. Not everyone wants to spend 4-5hours out on the course, dress to a certain standard, and learn all the rules. They just want to be social players that can get access once in a while. In regards to attracting top players: At the end of the day, its all about the money and the world ranking points which usually go hand in hand. So until we can get bigger sponsors here for a Majors, the top players most likely will not come. Also our top players probably dont really want to lose any ground by being away from the main tours. I think the One Asia idea may be a possible solution, if all the governing bodies can sort out their issues as well. Cheers |
