New Aussie course designer joins the ranks

POSTED ON July 6, 2009 @ 10:00 am

Gold Coast golf course architect, Richard Chamberlain, has announced the establishment of his own golf course design company, Richard Chamberlain Golf Design.Richard Chamberlain may not necessarily be a name all that familiar in golfing circles however over the past twenty years he has worked alongside two of Australia’s most successful designers.

Chamberlain initially cut his teeth in golf course design when hired as a draftsman by Marsh Watson (Graham Marsh and Ross Watson) when that organisation was involved in the creation of such fine courses as Robina Woods, Paradise Palms, The Vines Resort, Terrey Hills and Horizons Resort. When the Marsh Watson team dissolved in 1992, Chamberlain remained in the design office of Graham Marsh. During the next few years the Gold Coast based company became a highly acclaimed and award winning design organisation, leading the way in computer visualisation techniques and plan production, an area in which Chamberlain played a key role.

In 2001 Chamberlain reunited with his old boss Ross Watson. The pair’s goal from the inception of their union was to fast track Chamberlain’s involvement in all aspects of golf course design and construction and for Watson to gradually decrease his involvement and eventually hand over the reigns. Things quickly changed direction however as the next few years would prove to be one of the busiest and most fruitful periods of either of their careers.Re-modelling works during this period at courses such as Avondale, Pymble, Indooroopilly, Toowoomba City, Concord, Bonnie Doon and Wallacia, kept the team busy but the appointment as designers in the redevelopment of the prestigious Royal Sydney Golf Club raised their profile to a new level. Chamberlain and Watson proved to be a formidable team as together they created exciting new golf courses such as Yering Meadows (Croydon), Kooindah Waters, Pacific Harbour and the highly acclaimed Magenta Shores.

Having served a long and in-depth “apprenticeship” in the field of golf course design, Chamberlain begins business on his own with an extensive background in all facets of the design industry. From initial concepts, hrough detailed design and, very importantly, the accurate implementation of such designs, Richard Chamberlain has already displayed he has what it takes to become one of Australia’s leading golf course designers in the years ahead.

Chamberlain has established an impressive list of clients and projects including Wollongong, Toowoomba City, Melville Glades, Wembley Golf Complex and the Brisbane Golf Club.  “I feel blessed to have worked with and been trained by some of the best but am excited by the prospect of branching out on my own,” said Chamberlain from his Gold Coast office. “Clearly these are challenging times for the golf course industry. I am however confident that the experience I have gained to date leaves me well placed to offer a comprehensive and very much hands on service, tailored to the changing needs of the 2000’s and beyond.
