Last Friday night (11th March, 2016), the West Australian golfing community came together to celebrate the 2016 WA Golf Industry Gala Dinner awards night at Crown Perth.

One of the highlights of the night  was the awarding of the prestigious WA Golf Industry recognition Award to GMA and GMAWA Life Member Alex Monteath.

In front of a capacity filled Ballroom of 450 attendees from within the industry, Alex was humbled and truly surprised when his name was read out as this year’s recipient of the award.

The award is bestowed on a person in recognition of their enormous contribution to the game of Golf in Western Australia and importantly their positive impact on and improvement to the golfing industry.

Master of Ceremonies and media personality Tim Gossage, noted that “this year’s winner was someone who was highly regarded and respected in all areas of the industry”.

To summarise his career, Alex held the position of Honorary Secretary of the Three Springs Golf Club for five years, Managing Secretary of Royal Perth Golf Club for three years, Managing Secretary of Lake Karrinyup Country Club for 27 years, and was the recipient of the Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

Alex’s GMA career includes being a member of GMAWA for 44 years, President of GMAWA for 19 years, Delegate to the Federal Council for 19 years, Federal President for four years, No.1 Fellow Member of GMAWA, and Life Member of both GMA and GMAWA.

Golf Industry Central congratulate Alex Monteath on receiving the WA Golf Industry Recognition Award.

The dinner saw many recognised for their outstanding achievements, as well as professionals Danielle Montgomery, Braden Becker and David Stoltze graduating to full membership with the PGA of Australia.

Just one year after graduating, Capel’s Troy Murphy earned the Hilary Lawley PGA Professional of the Year award thanks to his work at Capel Golf Club.

For the third time in four years, Royal Fremantle’s Minjee Lee won the Outstanding Golf Achievement award as the Western Australian Golfer of the Year. The highlight for 2015 was Minjee’s win at the Kingsmill Championship in her debut season on the LPGA Tour.

Golf Course of the year awards went to Kalgoorlie Golf Course (regional) and Joondalup (Metropolitan) while WA’s facilities of the year were Busselton Golf Club (regional) and Gosnells Golf Club (metropolitan). Gosnells General Manager James Wilkinson told GolfWA of his delight on behalf of the club.

“Gosnells Golf Club is very  proud to be the recipient of the Metropolitan Golf Facility of the year,” said Wilkinson.

“It is great for our Club to receive this type of recognition from our industry peers. Everyone involved with our Club is very honoured to receive this award.”
