Australian golfing legend Greg Norman has begun plans for a golf course at the foot of Uluru.

Sky News understands the Shark mapped out plans for the course after a recent visit to the rock with Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles.

‘On my invitation he’s come to the Northern Territory looking at what sporting and economic investments he can make in the Territory,’ Mr Giles said.

‘Yulara and Uluru was one particular visit, we will see what will come of that.’

Sky News understands Norman has had preliminary discussions with the operators of the Ayres Rock Resort and has already begun drawing up rough plans.

The Uluru course is one of two Norman is believed to be planning in the Northern Territory. The other, on Government land near the Territory Wildlife Park, about 60km outside of Darwin.

The Shark is poised to sign a heads of agreement with the NT Government about the Top End development.

Mr Giles says he welcomes investment that can grow tourism and employment opportunities for indigenous Australians.

‘I know that Greg’s been fortunate enough to build a golf course at the foot of the pyramids in Egypt,’ he said.

‘Wouldn’t it be fantastic to see, as an additional opportunity, not just having a resort and cultural opportunities at Uluru, but also the chance to have a shot of golf.’

After visiting the rock with Norman, Mr Giles called for a new conversation about climbing Uluru.

He says there are commercial opportunities for the local Anangu people in offering a safe climb.

‘I want to see more Aboriginal Australians working because I know that when an Aboriginal Australian works within a family there’s more chance their child goes to school, more chance their kid will get healthier food on the table, and more access and better access to health services,’ he said.
