New Zealand Golf takes a swing at diversifying the game

POSTED ON October 25, 2018 @ 7:46 am

Golf is a game for everyone.

That’s New Zealand Golf’s (NZG) message in their new initiative, attempting to make golf an all-inclusive sport.

NZG is drafting up a plan to include minority groups into the golfing community, including LGBTI members, women and those with disabilities.

Community groups such as Rainbow Tick and Woman in Sport Aotearoa is backing up the new scheme and Halberg Disability Sport Foundation is contributing money for a program delivered by NZG this summer, encouraging people with disabilities to try golf.

To assist in eliminating cost as a possible barrier, the orgaisation will provide subsidised costs on green fees, clinics and equipment as part of NZG’s initiative for people with disabilities. Standard golf rules will also be modified to help all age groups abilities play.

NZG sector relationship manager Carl Fenton said to stuff the sport wanted to understand and remove barriers to these groups from engaging in golf.

“It includes all parts of our industry – leadership [roles], rewarding careers, celebrating contributions and much more,” he said.

“This isn’t a box-ticking exercise. It’s an endeavour to ensure our sport is reflective of, and fully embraces, our rapidly changing society.”
