GA (QLD) Chairman and Nudgee General Manager Darren Richards touring PGA Life Member Paul King, PGA Immortal Charlie Earp and PGA State Manager Broc Greenhalgh around the new courses.

All 36 holes on the popular course located north of Brisbane is now to be redeveloped after the club has been able to stabilise its financial position over the past few years and now have sufficient funds available for a total overhaul.

The news of the extended redevelopment (previously only including 28 holes) was delivered in a notice to members late last week. The notice also stated that the course will be one of the first, if not the first golf course in Brisbane with a double green.

To this end, Nudgee Golf Club has engaged Course Architect James Wilcher from Golf By Design to develop concept designs for consideration by the Board ahead of moving to detailed design and costings. These costs will be tested against the current contract before making a final assessment of the Club’s cash position and awarding of the extended contract.

This final stage when approved will then be undertaken through the remainder of 2021 with a targeted completion date of the first quarter of 2022.

The Gateway Motorway upgrade

The club lodged the application to redesign the golf course in October  2017 after the club lost four of its 36 holes when the Federal Government resumed 8.84 hectares for the Gateway Motorway upgrade a few years earlier.

During the two year re-development and construction works the club has been able to operated with 27 golf holes in play and the club house, function rooms, driving range and facilities still open as usual.

Course Architect Wilcher has been overseeing the project along with a club appointed team of specialists and professionals.

Strong Membership Growth

The club has demonstrated strong membership numbers as of late, which have increased by just under 400 during the past 12 months.

The total membership across all categories now stands at 1,452.

During the past four months, members’ competition rounds totalled 25,294 compared to 15,550 for the same four-month period in 2019/20. This is a remarkable increase, no doubt fuelled jointly by the surge in membership along with the opportunity to enjoy playing different course configurations as additional holes come into play.

As a result of the increased membership number, the club has now decided to cease the acceptance of any new 7 day male members from March 1 for the unforeseeable future.

Any persons seeking this membership category after March 1 will be placed on a waiting list and the Board will review the situation on a monthly basis.

Members has been asked to be patience on popular days and time of play, as the situation will improve as more of the new holes come into play over the coming months.
