Canterbury’s Terrace Downs resort reopens as part of Kiwi-owned hotel group

The luxury Terrace Downs

The new owners of Terrace Downs have reopened the luxury golf and accommodation resort at Windwhistle in Mid-Canterbury.

New Zealand-owned hotel group CPG Hotels bought the resort for $6.6 million late last year after its previous owner, Japanese investor Hiroshi Hasegawa, died in Japan from Covid-19 at the age of 59.

Terrace Downs’ 18-hole golf course had remained mostly open over the summer, but now the accommodation and conference and dining facilities, including The Clubhouse restaurant, were back in business.

Relaunching

CPG Group operations manager Ronnie Ronalde said they were “really looking forward” to relaunching the hotel and re-establishing it as a destination for holidays, conferences, weddings, and golf.

The 250-hectare property, next to the Rakaia River, has a main hotel building with apartments and free-standing villas.

Rondale said the company would look at refurbishing the resort later this year and would eventually bring it under the five-star Fable brand.

CPG Group is owned by the wealthy Pandey family and headed by Prakash Pandey.

It has 10 other hotels around New Zealand and also has hotels in Fiji and the United States. Its other Canterbury assets are the Hanmer Springs Hotel, and the site of the former All Seasons in Papanui Rd, Christchurch.

27-bed three-storey hotel

The group planned to build a new 127-bed three-storey hotel on the Christchurch site after demolishing the derelict All Seasons two years ago. It also planned to refurbish the Hanmer Springs Hotel, the former Heritage Hanmer Springs, which the company bought last year.

Terrace Downs’ land was originally part of Snowdon Station. Japanese professional golfer Shinnosuke Saito bought the land and built a golf course on it in the 1990s, with the accommodation and facilities added in the 2000s.

Hasegawa bought the resort, near Mt Hutt in Mid-Canterbury, in 2012 after gaining Overseas Investment Office approval.
