Members Approve Major Redevelopment for Port Kembla Golf Club

POSTED ON September 23, 2025 @ 11:48 am

Members of Wests Illawarra and Port Kembla Golf Club have overwhelmingly voted in favor of a landmark proposal to partner with Swing Factory, paving the way for a major redevelopment of the historic club.

The plan, which members approved last night, represents a significant investment in the club’s future. It includes the construction of a state-of-the-art driving range equipped with the latest technology, a new 18-hole mini putt-putt course, and a complete refurbishment of the clubhouse. The golf course itself will also see substantial infrastructure upgrades.

A “Once-in-a-Generation” Opportunity

Danny Munk, CEO of Wests Illawarra and Port Kembla Golf Club, called the vote a “historic moment” for the club and the wider Illawarra region.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure the long-term future of Port Kembla Golf Club, while delivering new experiences that reflect the way people want to enjoy golf today,” Munk said. “With Swing Factory’s proven track record, members can be confident the club will remain a first-class golf destination while opening up exciting new opportunities for growth, tourism, and community engagement.”

Swing Factory, an Australian-owned company with established venues in NSW, Queensland, and Victoria, specializes in creating modern, family-friendly golf and entertainment precincts.

Jeremy Wilshire, General Manager of Destination Wollongong, praised the project, noting that it will add a new leisure precinct to the region. “I couldn’t have been more impressed with their product, operating model, and vision for integrating community and attracting visitors,” Wilshire said after visiting a Swing Factory facility in Sydney.

What’s Next?

A development application is set to be lodged with Wollongong City Council in November 2025. Following its approval, construction is expected to take 12 months.

Club management has assured members that golf course operations will continue without interruption throughout the construction period.

“The Port Kembla Golf Club redevelopment reflects a shared vision to safeguard the long-term viability of the club, preserve its contribution to the local sporting community, and create an iconic tourism asset for the Illawarra,” Munk added. “It will create a modern, inclusive, and family-friendly destination for golfers and non-golfers alike, appealing to both local residents and visitors.”
