The Glades hotel idea tees off
THE city’s biggest hotel operator, Mantra, looks set to open its next property at The Glades Golf Club at Robina after doing a deal with secretive Taiwanese owner Edwin Yu.
The new 60-room hotel is part of a larger development being planned by Mr Yu at The Glades, which also includes a six-level, 70-unit apartment complex that will sit nearby.
The project could see Mr Yu’s dream of a golf course development finally come to life after a well-publicised land swap with former developer John Fish fell over in 2010 after Gold Coast Council intervened.
Mr Yu is keeping quiet about the project, which is on a whole different scale to the $850 million mini city he planned to roll out at Surfers Paradise Golf Club with Mr Fish’s help.
But documents lodged with council revealed Mantra’s involvement and overall details of the development.
Mantra director of acquisitions Michael Lalli said the company was keen to be involved in the development of The Glades, which would be Mantra’s first golf resort on the Gold Coast.
“We are waiting for further news on development approval,” he said.
Mr Yu intends to join the boutique hotel to the existing clubhouse and put in a pool and other resort facilities for guests.
The building will have parking on two levels and hotel rooms on the top three floors.
The development is open for public comment until July 23.
