Mike Space Autumn 2017

POSTED ON March 23, 2017 @ 10:47 am

As Golf Industry Central comes closer to our 10th Anniversary in July, I think back to the time when I was figuring out what I wanted to do when I “grew up”. After 20+ years in commercial golf management it was time to reset my goals and create a new vision for moving forward.

I wanted to become a leading news and information resource for the golf industry in Australasia. Depending on how you look at things, I feel we’ve come a long way to accomplishing this. I’ve met some fantastic people along the way and have built many lifelong friendships due to the golf industry and more so from our little website.

Having a clear vision is critical to accomplish great things and it’s something I have thought about for our industry. We all deep down want the best for the game we create a livelihood from. Looking at our industry, we are heading in the same direction now, but the vision is still not as clear as I feel it could be. Would a simple common vision statement for all stakeholders help this become clearer, a stronger guiding light? My perspective is in this mag.

We’re now well into the new year of 2017, and things are getting busy at clubs and facilities around the country in terms of event and competitions, though weather has had impact in several regions.

I just recently attended the NSW PGA Awards night – my first time to attend but what a great venue Royal Sydney is with amazing food! It was an excellent evening to rub shoulders with people from various parts of our fine industry and a big congratulation to all the much worthy award winners.

In this first issue of 2017 we talked to World Golf Foundation (WGF) Chief Executive Steve Mona, who explained the major global trends seen in the golf industry last year, and what’s anticipated for the future. He also reviewed last year’s Olympic Games and what effect it may have had on golf participation globally.

We also wanted to take the opportunity in this issue to thank one of the major supporters of the global golf industry – maybe even the biggest in Australia – Dr Haruhisa Handa. Without his vigorous support through the ISPS HANDA organisation golf in Australia would be much more challenged than it is, and many of our pro tournaments may be non-existent!

At Golf Industry Central we hope you’re off to a good start of the new year, I know we sure are, and as always we hope you will enjoy these articles as well as a course development update and various industry news from around the country.

Please feel free to drop me a line if you ever need any assistance on what you may be undertaking at your facility or business.
