First Glimpse of New $45mil North Adelaide GC Upgrade

POSTED ON December 18, 2025 @ 2:42 pm

The South Australian State Government has officially pulled back the curtain on a landmark $45 million redevelopment of the North Adelaide Public Golf Course. Designed by the world-renowned Greg Norman Golf Course Design, the project aims to transform the site into a “world-class” golfing destination while significantly enhancing public access to the historic Adelaide Park Lands.

A New Era for South Australian Golf

The upgrade will deliver an 18-hole championship-standard course, a new driving range, practice areas, and a modern clubroom facility designed to blend into the parkland setting. Premier Peter Malinauskas highlighted the economic potential of the project, noting that the course is slated to host LIV Golf Adelaide and the Women’s Australian Open starting in 2028.

“With its stunning Adelaide Park Lands setting, unmatched views, and central CBD location, the North Adelaide Public Golf Course will become the best public golf course anywhere in the country,” Premier Malinauskas said. He noted that LIV Golf Adelaide has already contributed $217 million to the state’s economy over the last three years.

Environmental Stewardship and Heritage

Addressing community concerns regarding the environment, the government confirmed that the design prioritizes the preservation of the area’s natural canopy. While approximately 585 trees (6.5% of the 9,000 trees on-site) will be removed, the government has committed to a 3-for-1 replacement program, planting three new trees or seedlings for every one removed.

The project also places a heavy emphasis on the rich Kaurna heritage of the area. The government is working closely with the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation (KYAC) to ensure the respectful management of culture and the incorporation of Kaurna values and history into the final design.

Community and Accessibility

Despite the “world-class” upgrades, officials emphasized that the facility will remain a public course. Key design principles include:

  • No permanent fencing to ensure the park remains open to the public.
  • Improved accessibility with expanded walking and riding trails.
  • Inclusivity initiatives to grow golf participation among women and youth.

Kevin Naughton, President of the North Adelaide Golf Club, welcomed the news, stating the redevelopment ends “damaging speculation” about the site’s future. “What has been a great place to start, will become a great place to stay,” Naughton said, referencing the course’s history as the training ground for champions like Adam Scott.

Project Timeline

  • Current: Public viewing of designs available at the Christmas Test Festival (Adelaide Oval).
  • Mid-2026: Construction work scheduled to begin.
  • 2028: Course ready to host major international tournaments.
