Players self-police (largely) in terms of the rules and any transgressions, with golfers calling penalties on themselves, for incidents which only they might have seen.
The most recent high-profile example of a penalty being imposed on a top player, as opposed to a golfer calling themselves ‘out’, has been with Bryson De Chambeau at the recent Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
De Chambeau is undeniably a great player, a gifted entertainer (in a game which often needs some colour and ‘personalities’), and very popular with the crowds, but he might not have done his image any favours by his reactions to the penalty imposed by the R&A.
