Churchill-Waverley Golf & Bowls Club Marks Dual Milestones
Churchill-Waverley Golf & Bowls Club recently observed two major milestones: 100 years since the founding of the original Glen Waverley Golf Club and the 10th anniversary of the merger that established the current club.
Centenary Celebrations and Key Events
Members, guests, and local representatives gathered on 16 September for an Ambrose golf competition, a commemorative luncheon, and a bowls competition. The events brought together current and former members to mark the club’s history.
Attending guests included Mayor Paige Kennett, Cr Susan Pearce, Rowville candidate Max Williams, Golf Australia representative Terry Smith, and Life Members Roland Nicholson, Daryl Leask, Kaylene Ellis, and Geoff Ellis.
Legacy of Inclusion and Volunteer Support
During the event, Life Member Geoff Ellis spoke about his 55 years with the organization. Founded during an era when many golf clubs prohibited men and women from playing together on Saturday afternoons, the original Glen Waverley Golf Club established an inclusive approach that continues today. The gathering also recognized the contributions of past and present volunteers, committee members, staff, and club members.
Weather Impacts Second Event
A second celebration scheduled for 3 October faced severe weather, resulting in the cancellation of planned golf activities. Attendees instead gathered in the Spikes Bar to mark the occasion.
Reflecting on the milestone, a club representative stated:
“For 100 years, our club has been built on community, friendship and inclusion.
These celebrations were a fitting tribute to that legacy and a reminder of the strong
future that lies ahead for Churchill-Waverley Golf & Bowls Club.”
