$86 Million Mount Lofty Golf Estate Hotel & Resort Approved

POSTED ON July 18, 2025 @ 6:02 pm

Stirling, Adelaide Hills – July 18, 2025 – The long-awaited transformation of the former Stirling Golf Club into the Mount Lofty Golf Estate & Resort has received conditional approval, clearing the way for a landmark $86 million expansion that blends luxury accommodation, environmental stewardship, and enhanced community and tourism infrastructure.

🌿 Key Highlights & Community Focus

  • Consolidated Design: A refined proposal has replaced standalone “pod” units with a centralized, up-to-five‑storey hotel featuring over 80 suites and serviced apartments. This change preserves nearly one hectare of native bushland and slashes tree removal from 151 to just seven.

  • Adaptive Heritage Reuse: The heritage-listed perfumery building will be revitalized as a multifunctional café, gallery, and event space, further integrating the estate into the region’s cultural and historical fabric

  • Designed for the Region: The resort includes restaurant, function rooms, wellness centre, sports bar, and gallery—all set to enhance the visitor experience while retaining the 18-hole golf course with minor modifications

  • Infrastructure & Access Upgrades: Provisions include pedestrian-friendly paths along Golflinks Road, repositioned staff parking, widened roadways, and wastewater system improvements—all secured under an infrastructure agreement with Adelaide Hills Council

✅ Environmental & Planning Endorsement

“These amendments address many of the concerns raised by Council following community consultation,” stated Acting Mayor Nathan Daniell, praising the environmental concessions as a “real compromise”

State Planning Commission and Planning Minister Nick Champion granted provisional development approval in early July, following extensive public and technical review—overcoming initial objections, including a 900-signature petition focused on local ecology, particularly koala habitat Adelaide Now.

📅 Next Steps Timeline

  • Breaking Ground: Construction must begin within two years from approval.

  • Project Completion: The full development is set for delivery within five years.

  • Staged Applications: Separate development applications will follow for each component throughout the build

🌟 Economic & Social Benefits

The development is projected to generate nearly 200 FTE jobs during operation and inject millions into household incomes and local GDP over the coming decade. It will also yield a $9.2 million net community benefit over 30 years via improved infrastructure, environmental protection measures, and tourism growth PlanSA.

💬 Stakeholder Response

Mount Lofty Golf Course finance manager Clea Vetch welcomed the evolution, stating:

“New development means the area’s thriving, and the place needs a really good overhaul… We’re pleased to have new facilities here and we think it’ll be successful.”

🏞️ Preserving the Adelaide Hills’ Charm

With this revised vision, Mount Lofty Golf Estate & Resort seeks to preserve the region’s beloved landscape and community ambience while delivering a sophisticated hospitality destination. Local feedback and environmental oversight remain integral, ensuring that the Adelaide Hills can progress responsibly.
