Dirtbike hoons tear up golf club green
Vandals have used the Temuka Golf Club course in New Zealand as a dirt bike track.
The eighth green was destroyed by motorbike riders on Saturday night.
Greenkeeper Richard Shaw discovered the damage the next morning.
Club vice-president Ray Teahen said club members were unhappy at the “mindless vandalism” as it meant the green was now unusable.
The riders had used the green as their “skid pad”, spoiling it without any thought, he said.
“Guys here wondered how they would feel if they dumped glass and nails on their bike track.”
Midland Contracting had done a “wonderful job” clearing a path around and replanting native trees near the green.
However, this meant the motorbike riders could come off the river bed and drive on to the course, Teahen said.
The club had also just cored the green.
“They’ve rutted it out and made a right mess.”
The green had been shut and the club had a working bee on Monday to resow the grass. It was expected to be out of action for a month and a new green had been cut at the front of the fairway.
