KING Island’s future as a golfing destination received a boost from the federal government on Monday with funding for infrastructure.

Federal Tourism Minister Richard Colbeck flew to the island to announce a $300,000 grant to the Ocean Dunes Golf Course.

Senator Colbeck said the money would be provided under the Regional Tourism Infrastructure and Innovation Fund.

‘‘Golfing tourism will be a key driver of tourism on King Island and the Ocean Dunes Golf Course is expected to attract thousands of golfers each year,’’ Senator Colbeck said.

He said it was an exciting day to see people out playing the course, and there was no question in his mind the new developments would change the way that King Island is seen around the world.

Ocean Dunes director Richard Lees said the support from the government was important in providing the infrastructure needed for the second stage of the development. This includes a clubhouse and 21 units, to cater for the growing number of golfers coming to the island.

He said there had been a lot of promise but now it was all becoming a reality.

‘‘People want to come and see it because the courses are world class, and they can play world-class golf,’’ Mr Lees said.

The course has 16 of its 18 holes complete, with the final holes to be ready for play by September.

The course has been attracting interest from players from around Australia and the world.

Braddon MHR Brett Whiteley said King Island had exploded onto the world golfing scene.

‘‘Golf is one of the most lucrative tourism sectors and complements the existing King Island tourism brand,’’ Mr Whiteley said.

‘‘Tourists visit King Island knowing they will be treated to spectacular scenery, fine locally produced food and now world-class golfing courses.’’
