Gold Coast’s Southport Golf Club lifts restriction on female voting
A GOLD Coast golf club has lifted a restriction on women voting rights, driving out the “embarrassing” policy but still limiting female playing days.
Southport Golf Club last week moved to allow its “associate” female members to vote at meetings.
It is understood to be one of the last — if not the last — Coast clubs to do so.
Old club rules prevented female associate members from voting. But last Wednesday’s decision now allows associate females to have a say at the club’s Early General Meeting and Annual General Meeting.
The motion, which failed when an attempt was made to introduce it late last year, required 75 per cent of members to back it. It achieved 83 per cent support this time.
In a secret ballot, 226 voted for with 46 voting against.
