SHANX: The Birth of the Modern Mini Golf Course

POSTED ON August 3, 2025 @ 11:37 am

Golf has had a bit of an image problem in recent years: slow, expensive, old-style, and a little too serious for many people’s tastes. For newcomers, it can feel like an exclusive club with complicated rules and stiff traditions.

Peter Vlahandreas (Peter V) and his team at Greenspace Management saw that and decided to rewrite the rules.

Their solution? SHANX Mini Golf.

A reimagining of the sport in a format that’s social, exciting, and wildly fun for everyone – one playful, cleverly designed hole at a time. A format that is easy for anyone to enjoy from the first time they try it.

The Mini Golf Makeover

“Too stuffy, too many rules, and too boring – golf had to change,” Peter says. “We wanted to flip that script.”

And they have.

SHANX Mini Golf is not your childhood putt-putt. It’s for families, first-timers, 30-40 somethings looking for entertainment, golf lovers, and everyone in between. The holes are miniature masterpieces, scaled-down versions of real golf architecture with slopes, curves, and challenges, but always with a generous dose of fun.

SHANX Mini Golf mixes the nostalgic charm of old-school mini golf with the energy of a modern-day hangout spot. Whether you’re landing a perfect shot or missing hilariously, it’s all about those “Oohh – AAhh” moments that make the game memorable.

More Than Just Putt-Putt

From the beginning, Peter and his team weren’t interested in building another cheesy, windmill-filled course. They envisioned something smarter, more social, and design-driven. Think: Instagram-worthy aesthetics, community-focused layouts, and spaces where people want to linger.

It started at The Links Shell Cove in NSW (opened 2021). The council project wasn’t a sure thing, as there is a full structured tender process to follow.

Greenspace Management didn’t even follow the formal tender process. “We submitted a non-conforming tender,” Peter says. “We backed ourselves and believed in our concept—and it worked.”

That belief paid off. What was once a quiet, underused golf asset is now a thriving social hub. Links Shell Cove proved that SHANX wasn’t just a quirky idea—it was a blueprint for something bigger.

Designing Smiles (Not Just Courses)

Every SHANX course design evolves from lessons learned at the last. The team obsessively gathers feedback from players, operators, and onlookers to refine the experience.

But the biggest “aha” moment came from Peter’s wife.

At a course launch at Adelaide’s Regency Park, she noticed something odd, people weren’t laughing. That was a problem. Mini golf should be joyful, not frustrating.

From then on, the team leaned hard into what makes the game fun: dramatic shots, easier hole-in-ones, and laugh-out-loud moments. That pivot transformed the design philosophy.

“If it doesn’t make people laugh or cheer,” Peter says, “we redesign it.”

Enter: Rox the Fox

Every great brand needs a mascot, and SHANX has a showstopper.

Meet Rox the Fox: a bold, bouncy, selfie-loving character dreamed up by Peter’s cake- and ice cream-bribed nieces and nephews. More than just a mascot, Rox brings heart to every SHANX location—dancing with kids, high-fiving guests, and becoming the star of countless social media posts.

She’s the embodiment of the SHANX vibe: fun, fearless, and full of personality.

Not a Franchise – A Movement

Despite its rapid growth, SHANX isn’t selling cookie-cutter franchises. Instead, it offers a “brand-in-a-box”; a creative partnership that empowers local clubs to build custom courses tailored to their own communities.

Each SHANX course is unique, yet instantly recognisable. “When people think mini golf now,” Peter says, “they think SHANX.”

Golf, But With a Beat

These courses aren’t just places to putt. SHANX courses are built for events, music, and community vibes. With built-in power for DJs, great lighting, space for food trucks, and event-ready layouts, they’ve hosted everything from product launches to charity fundraisers.

“We’re creating destinations,” Peter explains. “Places where people gather—not just to play golf, but to connect. Our courses are genuine community hubs.”

Design That Dares to Be Different

SHANX draws inspiration from surprising places—architecture, street art, even pizza joints. One standout hole, cheekily named “The Dunny”, blends Aussie humour with bold design and gives players a solid shot at a hole-in-one.

It’s quirky. It’s hilarious. It’s as Aussie as it gets. And it’s very SHANX.

Global Recognition, Local Heart

The world is starting to notice. The R&A, golf’s global governing body, recently spotlighted SHANX in its Small Spaces Guide—a toolkit for making golf more inclusive and accessible.

Their message? You don’t need 100 acres to grow the game. You just need good design, smart ideas, and a sense of fun.

SHANX is the only mini golf course endorsed by the R&A globally – now that says something!

The Road Ahead

By the end of 2025, SHANX will boast six full-size courses—including a flagship facility at South Lakes Golf Club in South Australia, which promises to be their most ambitious yet.

But they’re not stopping there. Enter URBN SHANX: a bite-sized version made for rooftops, courtyards, and small urban sites.

The first one? Just 700 square metres. The next one, just 380 square metres. Proof that you don’t need a lot of space to make a big impact.

A Smart Investment

Here’s the kicker: SHANX Mini Golf courses aren’t just fun. They’re profitable. Most recover their build costs in 2–3 years from play alone—add food, drinks, and merch, and the numbers get even better.

Even a modest nine-hole layout can turn underused land into a moneymaker.

And here is the best validation of all, SHANX owns and operates it’s own SHANX sites – so their money is where their mouth is… and their clients get the benefits of their experience. SHANX partners for the life of the product, so you’re in great hands.

One Laugh at a Time

At its core, SHANX isn’t just about mini golf. It’s about breaking down barriers. Making the game feel modern, vibrant, and open to all. It’s about high-fives, shared smiles, and those little sparks of joy that bring people together.

“We’re not just building courses,” Peter says. “We’re building ‘Oohh – Aahh’ moments.”

And in doing so, they’re changing the way the world sees golf—one laugh at a time.
