Gold Creek CC owner stands firm despite criticism of plan to shrink course
On Sunday, around 500 people gathered for a Community of Nicholls Residents Group meeting at John Paul II College, where many applauded politicians with intentions to oppose rezoning of golf course land.
The director of Gold Creek Country Club, Harry Konstantinou, now urges locals to have an open mind about his plan to shrink the golf course, which has faced backlash since revealing it wants to redevelop roughly half the course land into residential or other commercial developments.
Mr Konstantinou told The Canberra Times he should be commended rather than slammed for consulting with the public before lodging a development application and that the golf course was not sustainable and could close tomorrow or “go the traditional developer way”.
“At the moment, Gold Creek is a destination where you go and do something once a year,” Mr Konstantinou said.
“As much as people love Gold Creek, no one is successful there and that doesn’t make it sustainable for business.”
Mr Konstantinou added that the Konstantinou Group had lost $8 million on the golf course in the last 12 years, including $550,000 last financial year.
