Australia’s First Purpose-Built 12-Hole Golf Course Opens in Sydney

POSTED ON June 4, 2026 @ 9:23 am

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA —  Newgreens Chatswood Golf Club has officially unveiled the nation’s first purpose-built 12-hole golf course.

Located in Sydney’s Lower North Shore just five minutes from the Chatswood CBD, the highly anticipated course opened its gates with a community launch event on Sunday, 31 May. The layout is specifically engineered to eliminate one of the biggest traditional barriers to the game: the massive four-to-five-hour time commitment of an 18-hole round.

From Financial Struggle to Innovation

The transformation of the site was born out of spatial constraints and economic necessity. Originally operating as Chatswood Golf Club, the previous 18-hole configuration was heavily compromised, with 13 holes situated on its own land and five holes leased from the local council.

“The course was constrained and challenging from a safety perspective as four holes crossed over and the club was struggling financially,” explains Neil Crafter of architecture firm Crafter & Mogford.

The turning point came when a local developer partnered with the club to construct retirement apartments on land previously occupied by the car park, injecting vital financial support. Rather than attempting to cram 18 safety-compromised holes back onto the reconfigured layout, the team made a strategic decision to build 12 premium holes instead.

The Design Strategy

Crafter & Mogford, who first spearheaded the property assessment in 2020, designed the 12-hole course with long-term land security in mind. Nine holes sit entirely on the club’s own land, ensuring a complete course remains viable even if the council-leased land (which hosts the remaining three holes) ever becomes unavailable.

The resulting layout offers immense flexibility for all types of players:

  • The 12-Hole Core: The primary offering managed by precinct operator Clublinks, designed to fit seamlessly into the schedules of time-poor professionals, families, and social golfers.
  • The 18-Hole Option: Traditionalists who still want a full 18-hole scorecard can play a specific six-hole loop (holes 1 through 5, followed by the 9th) to complete their round.

Industry experts have already taken notice of the unique layout. Mike Orloff from Golf Industry Central visited the newly completed venue and praised the transformation, noting it is a “very impressive facility, can’t wait to try the golf course.” It looks like a lot of fun, but very challenging too. The green complexes are excellent.”

A Complete Lifestyle Hub

The golf course opening marks the final piece of the broader Newgreens Chatswood lifestyle precinct, which partially rolled out late last year. The site has successfully positioned itself as a community asset far beyond just a sports venue, offering:

  • Premium Dining: Featuring high-end Italian cuisine at Dodici alongside all-day casual dining at Tempo.
  • Holistic Wellness: A state-of-the-art wellness facility boasting a high-performance gym, group fitness classes, and a heated hydrotherapy pool.
  • Functions & Events: Purpose-built corporate and social spaces, including a grand Ballroom, Boardroom, and an intimate 26-seat private theater.

“We’re setting a new standard for modern play—golf that moves at the pace of modern life,” says Stephen Peverett, NSW State Manager for Clublinks. “You shouldn’t have to choose between a busy schedule and the game you love.”
