Cardiff golf driving range closes down
Newcastle will lose one of its two main golf practice centres when Cardiff driving range closes on June 16 to make way for an aged-care facility.
Tom Cupitt, who has run the range for the past three years on a month-to-month lease, will reopen on 100 acres of land as Tom’s Golf Range at the former Westside golf course at Rutherford.
“Everyone you tell is heartbroken. It’s quite sad,” Cupitt told the Herald on Monday. “It’s a pretty big hole in the Newcastle golf scene.”
Cupitt announced the closure in a Facebook post on Sunday night which attracted 747 comments.
“We will greatly miss all of our supporting and loyal customers over the years,” he said in the post. “Unfortunately all good things have to come an end and we are sorry to leave a hole in the golfing society of Newcastle, but this is out of our control.”
Cupitt said the Cardiff range had been popular with serious and casual golfers.
“Sundays for instance, you get good weather, you get people hung over, people on dates. People come from Maitland, the Central Coast.
“I don’t advertise much except on Facebook, and we get a steady flow of people most days.”
HammondCare is the company behind the development on the Cardiff site.
