Containers for Change Partners with GolfWA to Support ‘Sticks for the Stix’ Initiative

POSTED ON August 3, 2026 @ 11:05 am

Containers for Change has joined GolfWA as the official partner of the “Sticks for the Stix” program, an initiative designed to boost golf participation rates across regional Western Australia.

Under the program, members of metropolitan golf clubs are encouraged to donate pre-used golf clubs and equipment. The collected equipment is then redistributed to regional clubs across the state to help beginners access the sport.

The reuse model mirrors the core mission of Containers for Change, which coordinates Western Australia’s container deposit scheme. Since its inception in 2020, the scheme has collected and recycled more than 5 billion drink containers.

Expanding Access to Regional Golf

WA Return Recycle Renew Limited CEO Tim Cusack expressed support for the collaboration and its benefits for regional communities.

“As Scheme Coordinator for Containers for Change, the organisation is delighted to support a partnership that will deliver meaningful benefits for golf clubs and communities across Western Australia,” Cusack said.

“We are proud to support the Sticks for Sticks program, which plays an important role in improving access to golf and creating more opportunities for Western Australians to participate in the sport.”

GolfWA Clubs & Facilities Manager Brett Symons highlighted that limited equipment availability remains a primary obstacle for prospective players in country regions.

“A lack of access to quality golf clubs and equipment is a significant barrier to people getting into golf in regional areas,” Symons said. “The generous contributions we receive through Sticks for the Stix genuinely open doors for beginners of all ages to try golf – and hopefully build a life-long love of the sport.”

Environmental and Fundraising Opportunities for Clubs

In addition to equipment donations, the partnership encourages affiliated golf clubs and facilities across GolfWA’s network to implement container recycling programs on site.

“By activating Containers for Change across GolfWA’s network of affiliated clubs and facilities, we are making it easier for golfers to recycle their drink containers while directly supporting the clubs they love,” Cusack said.

“Through Containers for Change, we have seen firsthand the positive environmental, social, and fundraising outcomes that clubs can achieve through container collection,” he added. “We look forward to working closely with GolfWA and its affiliated clubs to maximise the impact of this partnership, helping to strengthen local clubs, support community participation, and deliver lasting benefits for the WA golfing community.”
