Controversy Surrounds McLeod Country Golf Club’s Development Plans

POSTED ON September 1, 2023 @ 6:51 am

The announcement of a new development project at the McLeod Country Golf Club in Brisbane has sparked frustration and concern among local residents.

Plans to transform a portion of the golf course into a multi-story retirement village have left many fearing that the development could become an eyesore and disrupt the serene landscape around the beloved course.

However, the McLeod Country Golf Club says that the development is essential for their financial survival, as they face mounting economic pressures.

While the impact on the community appears limited with fewer than 20 homes being directly affected, the golf club’s predicament adds urgency to their decision.

The proposed development envisions the construction of 130 villas and apartments near Tekapo Street, which would necessitate alterations to the layout of the golf course. Specifically, the 14th fairway would house the new structures, prompting adjustments to the course design.

To accommodate the development while maintaining a par 71 layout for men, the 14th hole would be shortened to a par 3. There’s also contemplation about lengthening the 12th hole to a par 4.

The potential modifications raise questions about the overall course integrity, particularly with regard to the par for men and women players. Community members are expected to engage in discussions about these proposed changes during a series of information sessions starting this Friday.
