Eastlake GC in Sydney Leads the Way in Sustainability and Course Safety Initiatives

POSTED ON October 26, 2024 @ 11:30 am

Eastlake Golf Club, located in the heart of Sydney, is demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, with recent projects solidifying its place as a leader in the golf industry’s push toward greener practices. As part of its strategic vision, the Club has undertaken significant efforts to enhance both the ecological health of its course and the safety of course neighbours and residents.

A major highlight of Eastlake Golf Club’s environmental achievements is its recent listing on the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, an international not-for-profit organization that supports and rewards credible sustainability initiatives in golf. This recognition speaks to the Club’s dedication to promoting the sport’s environmental and social value, and its efforts to reduce its ecological footprint while improving the experience for its members and the community.

One of the standout projects is the planting of over 3,000 native trees and 1,500 native grasses throughout the course, a collaborative effort between course staff, Greater Sydney Landcare, and local volunteers. This large-scale reforestation supports Eastlake’s Course Safety plans, designed by legendary Australian golfer Craig Parry, which are currently before Bayside Council. The goal of these plans is to minimize the risk of errant golf balls leaving the property by establishing natural barriers along key fairways, including the fourth, sixth, and eighteenth holes. These plantings will not only improve safety but also contribute to the overall aesthetic and environmental health of the property.

In preparation for this project, the Club undertook the removal of several non-native trees and grass areas to make way for the restoration of the native Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub vegetation, a crucial step in preserving the unique ecological landscape of the course. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to ensure that Eastlake Golf Club complies with its Environmental Management Plan and remains a resilient green space for future generations.

In addition to its reforestation work, Eastlake Golf Club has taken bold steps toward reducing its carbon footprint. The Club recently installed a 100kW solar panel system on the roof of its Clubhouse, significantly reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. This move towards clean energy aligns with the Club’s overarching goal of integrating sustainability into all aspects of its operations.

Eastlake Golf Club’s recent initiatives reflect a broader commitment to long-term sustainability, ecological restoration, and safety. Through projects like native tree planting, the adoption of solar power, and course safety upgrades, the Club is continuing the golf industry’s increasingly ‘green’ reputation and paving the way for a greener future.
