Evans Head Golf Club Devastated by Massive Multi-Night Cart Theft

POSTED ON February 3, 2026 @ 2:44 pm

A wave of targeted thefts has left the Woodburn-Evans Head Golf Club reeling after 16 golf carts were stolen, trashed, and scattered across the region in a series of brazen raids over the final weekend of January and early February.

What was meant to be a week of celebration following the successful Woodburn Evans Head Golf Classic has turned into a nightmare for the volunteer-run organisation.

A Trail of Destruction

The stolen carts, valued for their utility to the community and the club, have been found discarded in various states of ruin:

  • Near Evans River K-12 School: A blackened, twisted metal frame lies abandoned by the roadside.
  • The Cane Fields: Another mangled wreck sits nestled in crops opposite the golf club.
  • The Blue Pool: In a particularly dangerous turn, one cart was spotted submerged in the local swimming hole, posing a significant risk to swimmers.

“Heartbroken and Devastated”

Club President Peter “Pencil” O’Connor described the situation as a crushing blow to a club still recovering from the twin hits of major flooding and Cyclone Alfred.

“We are heartbroken,” O’Connor said, standing amidst the now-empty sheds where recharging cords hang uselessly from the walls. “They were in their shed with brand new locks. Two were stolen a few weeks ago, but five were stolen on Sunday night (Feb 1) and nine last night (Feb 2).”

The loss of 16 out of the club’s 23 carts has crippled their operations. The club is a vital hub for local community fundraisers, and O’Connor warned that several upcoming events may now face cancellation.

Community Rallies Amidst the Loss

Despite the “thoughtless theft,” the local community is already beginning to push back. Brad Mitchell Electrical has stepped in to redo the club’s lighting, and security is being significantly tightened.

“We’ve also got the CCTV cameras all being upgraded,” O’Connor confirmed, as the club works closely with local police to track down those responsible.

Can You Help?

The club and local authorities are appealing to the public for any information regarding the thefts or the sightings of the carts.
