Golf NSW Appointed Crown Land Manager for Cammeray Course
SYDNEY – The Cammeray Golf Course has been permanently secured as a public sporting facility following a major management overhaul announced by the New South Wales Government today.
In a decisive move aimed at resolving years of community concern and land-use ambiguity, the Minns Labor Government has officially appointed Golf NSW as the new Crown land manager for the site. The landmark long-term arrangement ensures that one of Sydney’s last remaining public nine-hole golf courses will be legally protected from future development or closure, preserving it for generations to come.
The 120-year-old course has long served as an affordable haven for local golfers, contrasting sharply with the exclusive, high-cost private memberships that dominate the city’s golfing landscape. Officials state that the transition to Golf NSW will guarantee that the fairways remain financially accessible to families, juniors, seniors, and casual players alike.
Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper emphasized the community significance of the decision, noting that local voices had played a pivotal role in driving the government’s intervention.
“Cammeray Golf Course has been part of this city’s sporting fabric for over 120 years,” Minister Kamper said. “It is a course where kids learn the game, where retirees stay active, where working families can afford to play. We will not let that be taken away.”
“Local residents have been loud and clear, they want to keep their golf course. We’ve heard that, and today we’re delivering on it,” he added.
Under the freshly brokered agreement, the broader Cammeray Park reserve surrounding the course will remain under the ongoing care and management of the North Sydney Council, ensuring that wider multi-sport and community recreation activities continue seamlessly alongside the golfing greens.
The appointment brings substantial sporting expertise to the helm. Golf NSW, the state’s peak organizing body for the sport, has committed to deploying a “community-first” operational model designed to enhance accessibility and foster local engagement across all skill levels.
Stuart Fraser, Chief Executive Officer of Golf NSW, expressed gratitude for the appointment and noted that the timing aligns perfectly with a broader resurgence of interest in the sport across the state.
“Golf NSW is honoured to be appointed as Crown Land Manager of Cammeray Golf Course by Minister Kamper and the Minns’ Government,” Fraser said. “The game of golf continues to enjoy unprecedented growth, and Golf NSW looks forward to working with the local community and the Club’s Board in welcoming players of all abilities to the greens and fairways.”
The decision marks the conclusion of a prolonged period of uncertainty surrounding the future of the premium lower North Shore land asset. By locking in a dedicated sports administrator under the Crown Land framework, the government aims to establish a permanent barrier against non-sporting redevelopment, effectively securing the green space as a public utility in perpetuity.
