MIKE ORLOFF: A First Look at Royal Queensland’s Short Game Expansion

POSTED ON August 7, 2026 @ 12:22 pm

By Mike Orloff

I recently had the privilege of stepping onto the grounds at Royal Queensland Golf Club (RQGC) in Eagle Farm, Queensland, to preview one of the most exciting development projects currently underway in the region.

Thank you, QSTMA (formerly AGCSA), for the invitation. A group of about 150 people attended the “Walk and talk” to see the new project, some holes pretty much finished and many still growing in. It’s a unique offering for the golfing community.

As Brisbane prepares to take center stage for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games – where RQGC will host the Olympic golf events – the club isn’t just polishing its championship layout; it’s completely redefining its footprint.

Unlocking the “Eastern Land”

The canvas for this ambitious project spans roughly 35 hectares of what locals call the “Eastern land,” situated directly on the east side of the Gateway Bridge. This prime parcel was returned to the club following the Gateway Bridge duplication project, opening up a rare, expansive slate right along the Brisbane River.

To bring this space to life, RQGC partnered with world-renowned design firm OCM Golf – led by the trio of Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking, and Ashley Mead. Their vision balances modern strategic fun with deep respect for the land’s history.

Key Highlights of the New Layout

What OCM has mapped out goes far beyond a standard practice facility. It’s an immersive, flexible golfing ecosystem designed for every level of player:

  • Flexible 9-Hole Short Course: Featuring fluid, adaptable teeing grounds, the short course allows for countless routing variations, making every round feel unique.
  • Saltmarsh Island Green: A true signature feature, incorporating the natural coastal environment into a high-stakes, highly visual par-3 experience.
  • Restoration of the Historic 14th: Heritage lovers will appreciate the resurrection of RQ’s iconic pre-bridge era 14th hole—a classic par 3 situated near the old Tangalooma ferry site.

World-Class Practice & Lifestyle Amenities

Beyond the 9-hole short course, the scale of the practice facilities is staggering:

1. The 4,500 m² “Himalayas-Style” Putting Green

A massive, heavily contoured putting surface modeled after St Andrews’ iconic Himalayas. It promises endless entertainment, whether you’re working on serious line-and-length control or settling a post-round wager with friends.

2. High-Performance Practice Grounds

Upgraded, expansive practice areas tailored for elite game development. As Olympic teams prepare for 2032, these grounds will serve as a premier warm-up and high-performance training hub.

3. The Riverfront Eastern Pavilion

A modern, multi-purpose riverfront pavilion complete with:

  • An undercover outdoor viewing deck overlooking the action.
  • A fully serviced kiosk and administrative spaces.
  • Integrated outdoor racquet sport courts to expand the club’s lifestyle appeal.

The Broader Impact: High-Fun, Low-Barrier Golf

This new layout, with no permanent tees, gives members and guests a place for quick 45-minute rounds, dedicated wedge-range practice, and a casual, welcoming environment for junior golfers and beginners. It proves that a club can maintain elite championship standards while remaining fun, inclusive, and forward-thinking.
