NZ: Record Attendance at 2026 Canterbury Golf Awards

POSTED ON August 29, 2026 @ 12:37 pm

A record crowd of 150 golfers, supporters, volunteers, and club representatives gathered at Christchurch Golf Club on Friday night for the Canterbury Golf Awards Dinner. Celebrating the 2025/2026 season, the event remains New Zealand’s only dedicated awards evening for golf, honoring both elite on-course performances and the off-course contributions that sustain the regional game.

Top Individual Honors and Player Awards

The evening’s primary player awards recognized top performers across multiple categories:

  • Women’s Golfer of the Year: Junie Chang (Russley Golf Club)
  • Men’s Golfer of the Year (Joint Winners): Cooper Moore (Clearwater Golf Club) & Yuki Miya (Clearwater Golf Club)
  • Junior Girl Golfer of the Year: Vanessa Lim (Russley Golf Club)
  • Junior Boy Golfer of the Year: Etienne Collier (Avondale Golf Club)

Junie Chang stepped up to win Women’s Golfer of the Year after receiving the Junior Girl Golfer of the Year award in 2025. Her season highlights included winning the Canterbury Match Play, representing Canterbury at the NZ Interprovincial level, and winning the 2025/2026 Order of Merit title at the Tour Championship. Chang also received the Liz Douglas Trophy for achieving the season’s lowest women’s stroke average.

Women’s Golfer of the Year – Junie Chang

The Men’s Golfer of the Year category introduced a finalist format featuring four nominees: Ricky Kang, Cooper Moore, Sam McGill, and Yuki Miya. Cooper Moore and Yuki Miya were named joint winners following seasons that included representative honors, professional event victories, and international performances. Fellow finalist Sam McGill earned the Vardon Trophy for achieving the season’s lowest men’s stroke average.

The Eagles Golf Society Promising Junior awards were presented to Aisha Lee (Russley Golf Club) for girls and Jack Ferguson (Clearwater Golf Club) for boys.

Life Membership Honors Long-Serving Leader

Debbie Scott of Harewood Golf Club was awarded a Canterbury Golf Life Membership for her contributions to women’s golf spanning over a decade.

Since 2016, Scott has managed and selected the Canterbury Women’s Masters team, chaired the Canterbury Women’s Committee for five years, managed the Canterbury Women’s team for five consecutive years, and served two years on the Canterbury Golf Executive Committee. She previously received a Distinguished Service Award in 2023.

Unsung Heroes and Greenkeeping Recognition

Several awards highlighted the administrative and turf-management personnel supporting local clubs:

  • Administrator of the Year (Tom and Lyn Whitaker Trophy): Eleanor Youngman (Culverden Golf Club), recognized for 31 years of service as Club Secretary alongside work in catering, gardening, and clubhouse maintenance.
  • Volunteer of the Year (Jim & Rita Townsend Trophy): Quentin Ashdowne (Everglades Country Golf Club), recognized for his leadership as Club President since 2015, including managing rosters, filling shifts, and mentoring apprentice greenkeepers.
  • Services to Greenkeeping: Garry Worsley (Avondale Golf Club), recognized for over 20 years of course maintenance, including rebuilding the club’s putting green and clubhouse surrounds.
  • Greenkeeper Trainee of the Year: Otis Holland (Harewood Golf Club), recognized for progressing from work experience to managing course operations during the Superintendent’s leave.

Service Awards were presented to David Silk for running the Simon Cup over the past 14 years, and Dion Kerr for leading the Executive Committee since 2020 as Canterbury Golf’s first Clearwater-member President.

Inaugural Team of the Year Award

The ceremony introduced the public-voted Team of the Year category. Following 609 total votes cast across a two-week period, the award went to the Harewood Golf Club Woodward Cup team.

The team secured the title after ending a 37-year wait for the Woodward Cup, recording victories over defending champions Clearwater and host venue Christchurch Golf Club. The finalist list also featured the Russley Golf Club 2025 Pollock Cup team, the Canterbury Boys 2025 NZ Interprovincial team, and the Ellesmere Golf Club 2026 Central Canterbury Shield team.

Guest Speaker and Season Summary

Three-time NZ Eisenhower Trophy representative, three-time Open Championship referee, and golf historian Phil Aickin served as guest speaker, offering stories and insights from his career in golf.

The event closed out a season marked by growth in participation, competitive performance, and community involvement across the region.
