Burleigh Golf Club tees up Retirement Partnership

POSTED ON August 11, 2016 @ 12:14 pm

A major development is being proposed at the Burleigh Golf Club which may be worth $5mil to the Club.

Club members gave the club a green light to lease part of its land to RetireAustralia to build a multistorey retirement village which will include a wellness centre and large carpark.

Of the 468 eligible members who voted, 431 (or 92 per cent) supported the motion at a special general meeting held in late June.

About 150 independent living apartments are earmarked for the land adjacent to the 10th fairway which backs onto Cantala Ave, Miami.

Burleigh Golf Club is 48 ha and the proposed lease parcel is about 1.6 ha.

General manager Ian Cottle said he was pleased members have strongly supported the project.

Mr Cottle said he believed the club was being reasonable and responsible making the decision to lease part of the club’s land to ensure the club’s longevity. We are going through the proper procedures to create a sustainable project for all involved.

RetireAustralia CEO Alison Quinn said: “One of the most important issues facing our communities is accommodating our seniors in their local area, where they have existing social, medical and historical connections, which is vital for people to live well as they get older.

“The Burleigh Golf Club is an ideal location for a retirement community given so few purpose-built, seniors housing developments are available in the area.

“Right now more than 2,400 people aged 65 years and over call Burleigh and Miami home, and it is projected these numbers will continue to rise over the coming years.

“A retirement village at Burleigh Golf Club will provide local residents the opportunity to live in their community, with beautiful amenity on their doorstep.” Ms Quinn said.

RetireAustralia will now take several months to undertake detailed planning and prepare a development application.

“We understand neighbours will have questions about the plan and the process,” Ms Quinn said.

RetireAustralia is working toward making a development application to Gold Coast Council in late 2016.
