About the club
Ayr Golf Club is an 18 hole, 5,861 metre championship course located just 1-hour from Townsville, Queensland. It currently has approximately 200 playing members and 40 juniors and is home to the former Women’s World No. 1 golfer and World Golf Hall of Famer Karrie Webb.
Local regional attractions include world class wetlands, Aboriginal Cultural Tours, fishing for barramundi, the longest span bridge in the Southern Hemisphere and Ayr is on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef.
Famous for its abundant sunshine and rich agriculture, the Burdekin shire’s (population 17k) most important asset is water. The Burdekin River, combined with a massive underground aquifer and the Burdekin Falls Dam, make the district drought resistant.

The club requires the services of an experienced Head Greenkeeper to work with their strong volunteer workforce in maintaining the golf facility. The focus of the role is to primarily look after the Toro irrigation system, greens, tees, and surrounds as well coordinate the volunteer workforce.
The fleet of machinery is all in great condition with a blend of Toro and John Deere mowers, top dressers, and other maintenance machinery.
The greens are 328 and are currently on an annual green replacement program with 7 greens already replaced with TifEagle. The fairways are a perfect blend of Queensland Blue Couch and Buffalo Grass that works well on this site providing consistent playing surfaces for members and visitors.
Due the location, the course has an abundant underground water supply for irrigating the course.
The successful applicant will report to the Greens Director, must be a team player, enthusiastic, motivated, and possess strong communication skills with all stakeholders.
Experience and Requirements
- Certificate 3 in Sports Turf Management or higher,
- Experience in all aspects of Golf Course maintenance,
- Competent with a wide range of turf machinery,
- Be hardworking and physically fit for manual work,
- Have a general understanding of the game of Golf,
- Understand WH&S and Environmental requirements for a Golf Course,
- Hold a current Australian driver’s licence,
- Have experience working with a volunteer workforce,
- Demonstrated ability within the industry of warm season agronomy practices; (Experience with TifEagle would be highly preferred),
- Effective listening, verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with people in a variety of circumstance from various backgrounds,
- Possess a thorough, organised and detail-oriented approach to work,
- Prior course construction experience is advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform all phases of agronomic operations with legislative compliance,
- Hold a Chemical Application licence and conduct spraying as per schedule,
- Provide the highest standard of course presentation and playing conditions with the resources available,
- An understanding of Toro Irrigation systems (operation and repairs),
- Assist with coordination of volunteer workforce.
Working Hours
The flexible work schedule will be primarily full-time Mon-Fri with occasional rostered work required on weekends and public holidays dependent on the golfing seasonal schedule.
Remuneration
An attractive salary package commensurate with the region will be negotiated with additional incentives to encourage club growth and sustainability. Relocation support and other educational opportunities are available.
$60k base salary plus super plus bonus (6mth/12mth) and ute. What are you waiting for!
