Long Reef Golf Club Submits Development Application for Clubhouse Refurbishment
Sydney’s Long Reef Golf Club has recently taken an exciting step toward securing its future with the submission of a Development Application (DA) to Northern Beaches Council for a major refurbishment of its beloved clubhouse. (This was lodged in April 2025.)
Situated on the northern beaches headland with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Long Reef Golf Club is a treasured community hub and popular destination for golfers, event-goers, and beachside diners alike. The proposed upgrades aim to modernise the facility, improve accessibility, and better serve members, guests, and the wider community for decades to come.
The proposed works reflect years of planning and consultation, including feedback from members and residents. The goal is clear: to maintain the club’s welcoming atmosphere and relaxed coastal charm while enhancing the venue’s functionality and sustainability.
“Our clubhouse has stood strong for many years, but it’s time we gave it the refresh it deserves,” said Club President Keith Warren. “This project isn’t just about bricks and mortar – it’s about future-proofing the club and creating a more enjoyable experience for all who visit.”
The DA outlines a series of improvements, including an upgraded function space with panoramic ocean views, a reimagined restaurant and bar area, modernised locker rooms, improved amenities, and state-of-the-art facilities to support the club’s growing golf and social programs. Environmentally sustainable design principles are at the heart of the project, with energy-efficient lighting, water-saving fixtures, and upgraded insulation among the planned features.
Crucially, the proposal also includes improved access for people with mobility challenges – an important step toward ensuring the clubhouse is inclusive and welcoming for everyone. This includes new lifts, ramps, and accessible bathrooms, making the facility fully compliant with modern standards.
One of the most striking elements of the redevelopment is the emphasis on enhancing the club’s unique setting. The new design takes full advantage of Long Reef’s coastal aspect, with expanded outdoor terrace areas and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the stunning ocean views.
“Long Reef is more than just a golf course – it’s a meeting place, a wedding venue, a neighbourhood favourite,” said General Manager BenRussell. “This redevelopment will allow us to deliver even better service and experiences while honouring the traditions that make this club special.”
Importantly, the redevelopment is not expected to impact the day-to-day operations of the golf course, which will remain open throughout the construction period should the DA be approved.
Long Reef Golf Club has been a part of Sydney’s sporting and social fabric since 1921, and this project represents the next chapter in its long history. The club is encouraging community members to support the application and provide feedback during the council’s public exhibition period.
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalise a much-loved part of our local community,” added the Club President. “We’re excited about what’s ahead and can’t wait to share the journey with our members and neighbours.”
