Maleny Golf Club Swapping Shipping Containers for $1.5M Clubhouse
The Maleny Golf Club is set to replace its famously modest clubhouse, constructed from two shipping containers, with a new $1.5 million permanent facility.
Members overwhelmingly approved a resolution on November 2nd, authorizing the board to debt-fund the construction of the fit-for-purpose venue. The new clubhouse is expected to be operational by mid-2026.
Club president Doug Evans hailed the vote as a “major milestone,” noting the club’s growth has outstripped the capacity of its temporary headquarters.
“Our members have shown incredible patience and support for this project to deliver a modern, functional clubhouse which reflects the quality of our course and depth of community support,” Mr. Evans said.
The club, which has approximately 550 members and an award-winning 18-hole course, has operated virtually debt-free since its first nine holes opened in 2015, using grants and surplus cash for course and maintenance facility upgrades instead of a permanent headquarters.
Funding and Design
The club has secured strong community backing, with members already offering loans totalling $725,000. They also have a preliminary agreement with the Bank of Queensland for a 10-year loan of up to $750,000. The project recently received owner’s consent from the Sunshine Coast Council.
The 422sqm modular design will allow for efficient off-site prefabrication. Site works are slated to begin in January, with the building delivered in six modules and lifted into place in a single day, becoming operational about eight weeks later.
The new facility will also be shared by other local groups, such as the Brisbane Astronomical Society, further cementing the club’s role in the community.
