POSTED ON May 2, 2026 @ 3:26 pm

TAURANGA – Golf New Zealand and Bay of Plenty Golf have announced the passing of Chris McAlpine, a long-serving administrator who spent two decades at the helm of regional golf operations. Known throughout the sporting community by the nickname “Fridge,” McAlpine passed away on the morning of April 27, 2026.

McAlpine served for 20 years as the Chief Executive Officer of Bay of Plenty Golf. He was a Life Member of both the regional association and the Tauranga Golf Club, where he was recognized as a “truly significant contributor” to the wider golfing community.

A Legacy of Service and Mentorship

In a joint statement, Golf New Zealand and Bay of Plenty Golf acknowledged his role in “shaping and strengthening the game across our region in ways that will be felt for generations to come”.

The organizations highlighted his multi-faceted impact on the sport:

Leadership: His commitment helped “mould the landscape of golf in the Bay of Plenty” and increased opportunities for players and administrators.

Advocacy: He was described as a “tireless advocate for the sport” who was passionate about every aspect of the game within the region.

Mentorship: Officials noted he served as a “generous mentor who helped countless people through their personal and professional development”.

Community Impact

Beyond his administrative duties, McAlpine was noted for his “unwavering support” and “generosity” toward the game and its people. Tauranga Golf Club stated, “His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him”.

“We are grateful for Chris’ achievements, his passion for the game, and the care he showed to so many over the years,” the national body stated.

McAlpine had recently retired from organizing long-standing international golf tours after decades of professional service. Arrangements to commemorate his life will be shared with the community once confirmed.
