NZ: Taranaki Golf appoint new boss

POSTED ON May 25, 2024 @ 10:56 am

New Taranaki Golf boss Peter Harold is teeing up so many ideas it’s almost keeping him awake at night.

The former New Zealand Rugby employee, who dedicated more than two decades of his working life in charge of educational resources across the spectrum of the sport, has come into the executive officer’s job just days after having an interview for the position.

“I want to use the skill set that I’ve developed over the years and start promoting it. I’m really interested in seeing what I can do.”
The first part of the job would be getting to know exactly what Taranaki Golf does and what more it needed to do to grasp opportunities coming from a sport that was burgeoning post Covid.

“I didn’t know this but golf has 4800 club members in Taranaki,” he said.

“When you compare that to rugby, they’ve only got 2000 something, so there is a lot of participants.”

The fact Taranaki had 18 courses was the perfect place to start.

“We could set up challenges for players to knock them all off in one year or two years, that’s just one idea,” he said.

“We also have to think how we can deliver the game so more people can play it.”

Harold was delighted with the dedicated work golf participation officer Lucinda Searle and club engagement co-ordinator Chris Hill were doing in their job spaces and believed there was a lot more scope to build on it if resourced enough.

“But I’ve got a lot of listening before I can do a lot of changing. But I hate the word change, I think I’m here to grow it and that’s the most important message – I’m here to grow with all the good people and all the volunteers.”
