Port Kembla Golf Club Set for Major Redevelopment Under Proposed 30-Year Lease
Port Kembla Golf Club could undergo a significant transformation if a proposal by owners Wests Illawarra is endorsed by members at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Sunday, 14 September.
The plan would see the golf facility leased for 30 years (with a further 20-year option) to Swing Factory, a golf venue developer and operator with existing sites in Sydney and Melbourne.
Wests Illawarra, which amalgamated with Port Kembla Golf Club in 2014, said the proposal is designed to safeguard the course’s long-term future while introducing modern amenities and new revenue streams.
“It will preserve the high standard of the course while introducing modern facilities, upgraded amenities and enhanced member experiences,” said Wests Illawarra CEO Danny Munk.
“Swing Factory will make a significant capital investment to redevelop the driving range and clubhouse, as well as deliver substantial infrastructure enhancements to the existing golf course. Importantly, this approach is designed to ensure the long-term viability of the course, strengthen its contribution to the local sporting community and create opportunities for growth in participation, events and tourism.”
If approved, Swing Factory’s redevelopment plans include:
- Construction of a modern driving range
- Installation of mini golf facilities
- Refurbishment of the clubhouse
- Reconfiguration and upgrade of the golf course
- Construction and funding of a new irrigation system (subject to lease commencement)
The development application is expected to be lodged in November 2025, with planning approval anticipated by July 2026. Irrigation works are targeted for winter 2027.
Swing Factory, which positions itself as an entertainment-based golf business, focuses on creating a nationwide network of community-driven golf venues that combine advanced golf technology with family-friendly leisure activities. The company recently announced a multi-million-dollar redevelopment of Maitland Golf driving range to align with this model.
Under the Registered Clubs Act, members’ approval is required before “core property” such as Port Kembla Golf Club can be leased, sold or licensed. The EGM will provide Wests Illawarra members with the opportunity to vote on the proposal, with the meeting scheduled for 10:30 am at Wests Illawarra, Hargreaves Street, Unanderra.
