Sandy Golf Links now open to the public

POSTED ON December 12, 2020 @ 7:09 pm

A true Sandbelt golfing experience

Design by OCM, the long anticipated 18-hole Sandy Golf Links is now open to the public.

The first nine opened in late January and the project is a joint initiative between Golf Victoria, Golf Australia, PGA Australia and the Sandringham Golf Links Management with funding support from the Victorian Government.

Among innovative SGL techniques being used are the offer of free golf for kids aged under 16 accompanied by a playing adult (after 1.30pm), advocating maximum scores and even encouraging players to throw the ball from bunkers if they prove too tricky.

It’s another boost to golf’s strength within the Australian community, with the sport contributing $3.5 billion annually to the national economy and contributing health benefits worth an estimated $132 million each year.

A public golf course

The project is set out to deliver high quality golf practice facilities for players of all levels from social and beginners to elite level golfers, and will help grow the sport of golf in the Bayside area – importantly, the course will remain a public golf course.

Founded in Melbourne, Australia, OCM is the combined effort of industry leaders, directors Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking, and Ashley Mead: a multidisciplinary team of experts that offer a unique lens on course design and construction.

“We are cherry-picking the best bits of the Sandbelt really,” said Cocking. “The idea is that it is a Sandbelt experience for the public golfer.”

“We don’t have anything like this in Melbourne, not at this level, so it’s going to be really good,” adds Ogilvy.

“We did a lot of things so that the course doesn’t daunt anyone, but it’s also a great layout for lower handicappers because to score well, you probably need to attack it from the right spots,”

“It’s short enough that it’s playable for all, but a test for those who want to take it on using the width on offer.

”Really, it’s the perfect length for kids and beginners – both men and women – and those who are wanting to prolong their golf and now find the big courses too tough.”

The course itself has several other features that ensure it will remain an important public asset for years to come.

In the style of its Sandbelt neighbours, the fairways are wide off the tee and perfect for children and beginners.

From beginners to single figure handicappers Sandy provides an excellent golfing experience. Great course. Great fun. Don’t delay, make your on-line tee booking now on 0477 774 633
