Peninsula Kingswood First to Complete epar’s Climate Change Simulation
Understanding climate science and climate change, its impacts, and adaptation and mitigation strategies can be daunting. But not for these climate champions from Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club who recently undertook epar’s climate workshop.
Superintendent Glenn Stuart recognised the importance of education and training to address climate change and wanted to help his team better understand the impacts of a changing climate and empower them with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to act as agents of change.
“It was a privilege to deliver a climate workshop to the staff where we first explored climate science and the impacts a changing climate will have on people and the planet,” said epar – international leaders in EHS management.
“From rain-bombs to atmospheric water highways, to the impacts of a warming ocean and storm events, through to the impacts on food, energy, transport, and health and safety, and biodiversity, we explored the magnitude of the impact at 1.5 , 2, 3 and 3.6°C of warming.”
Climate Knowledge
Then in Stage 2 of the workshop, armed with new climate knowledge, they became climate action decision-makers. Their challenge – to identify actions and make decisions to limit global temperature rise well below 2°C with efforts to reach 1.5°C in line with The Paris Agreement.
The team was logged into the MIT – Climate interactive Simulator
Between setting a price on carbon – taxing coal, oil, and gas – electrifying transport – subsidising renewables – halting deforestation and supporting afforestation – through to banking on some carbon capture technology, and many more climate strategies, they got to 1.8°C. But the team agreed that by mobilising stronger and more ambitious climate actions they could get to1.5°C. And, they did.
Congratulations to everyone at Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club, especially as the first group of Climate Champions who are now empowered with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to act as agents of change.
