Hong Kong Golf Association Appoints High Performance Manager

POSTED ON December 22, 2017 @ 5:02 pm

Tim Tang has been appointed to the role of High Performance Manager with the Hong Kong Golf Association (HKGA).

Tang, who assumed the post on December 1, was born in Hong Kong and moved to the United States with his family at the age of four.

Danny Lai, the HKGA’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “I’m delighted to secure Tim’s services. He has lots of playing experience from his amateur career to professional Tours.

“He will be responsible to train our players, from the junior squad to the national team. He is here to help our players to perform their best and achieve our goals.”

Tang said: “It’s an honour and I’m very excited to take on my new position in the HKGA. Growing up, my dreams have always been to play on the PGA Tour or to become an elite coach to grow the game of golf.

“I know this is going to be a tough challenge and I’ll face a lot of obstacles, but I’m willing to contribute my best and hopefully can share my past experiences with the new generation of players.”

Tang started playing golf with his father and uncle when he was 12 and broke par for the first time at the age 14.

In his High School years, Tang was a three-time regional champion and was ranked as a top-five junior golfer in the state of South Carolina.

He went to the College of Charleston where he graduated in 2009 with a degree in communications.

Among his playing achievements, Tang was the number one player on the team in his senior year, he won the South Carolina Charleston City Amateur Championship twice and made it through the US Open Local Qualifier on three occasions.

Tang turned professional in the summer of 2009 and made it through the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School that year, missing the cut in the second stage.

He returned to Hong Kong in 2010 to pursue his career on the Asian Tour, passed the playing ability test and became the only tournament player in the Hong Kong Professional Golfers’ Association.

At the 2011 Asian Tour Qualifying School, Tang finished in the top-20 and became the only pro in Hong Kong to have full status on the Asian Tour.

Tang won his first professional event at the 2012 HKPGA Clearwater Bay Order of Merit Championship. In the same year, he was the only Hong Kong pro to make the cut at the Hong Kong Open, finishing 72nd.

Tang represented Hong Kong in the 2013 China National Games in Liaoning and helped the team claim the silver medal. He also made the cut in the Hong Kong Open for the second time that year.
