HAVE YOUR SAY: Another Sydney club under potential threat

POSTED ON November 10, 2023 @ 5:04 pm

The recent news about Moore Park GC in Sydney being cut in half, seemingly took many golfers by surprise though it’s been on the cards since at least 2010.  In September this year, the news also hit that Oakleigh Golf Course in Melbourne was going to community review on what its future may hold as a golf course or as a parkland.

In Northern Sydney, there is now a new threat on Cammeray Golf with the same approach being done with the Council requesting community feedback to possibly decide its future.

The email below came out from management requesting golfers and the industry to provide feedback, and we are trying to spread the news to get as much community support behind keeping the golf facility.

North Sydney Council is conducting an Open Space & Recreation Needs Survey to identify strategic directions and priorities to inform the preparation of a new Open Space & Recreation Strategy.

This strategy will provide a road map for the Council to deliver open spaces and recreation facilities that meet the current and future needs of residents, workers and visitors.

We ask all Members and social golfers complete the Council’s survey to support Cammeray Golf Club and the game of golf.

This is especially important in light of the recent announcement that Moore Park Golf Club will be reduced from a 18 hole course to a 9 hole course.

The Council’s website states :-

“There are many significant changes currently impacting the LGA and these changes highlight the need for Council to take a considered, strategic approach to future open space and recreation planning and provision. The Needs Study provides the opportunity to assess these changes and their impacts, as well as use the results of this assessment to inform decision-making about future open space, sport and recreation facility provision and development.”

Our course has been significantly impacted by the Western Harbour Tunnel Project however we are proud of the new layout that has been constructed at Cammeray Golf Club.   Since our reopening we have seen a large increase in the number of beginners, female golfers and juniors and we believe our facility is perfect to develop and nurture their love of the game.

As one of the largest parks and reserves in the North Sydney LGA, our public course plays an important role as an open space and recreation facility.  The course is a picturesque and peaceful environment and is home to local fauna and flora.  The dam within our course captures and harvests storm water run off and this water is used to irrigate the course, Tunks Park, Primrose Park and St Leonards Park as part of the North Sydney Storm Water Reuse Project.

We believe Cammeray Golf Course is an important and valued facility in the community and has an ongoing role in the provision and development of the game of golf.

The closing date for the survey is 3 December 2023 and we would appreciate all Members and golfers complete the survey.
