Flagstaff Hill Golf Club’s Clubhouse Area Transformation Underway
Flagstaff Hill Golf Club’s (Adelaide) exciting clubhouse redevelopment is now in full swing, with the last three phases of the golf facilities having officially kicked off simultaneously in the second week of January. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Himalayas Golf, is set to redefine the club’s golf facilities around their new clubhouse with cutting-edge synthetic turf and world-class (turf) practice areas. When completed, players can expect a completely revamped experience that will raise the bar for golf facilities across Australia.
There are four key phases to this project:
- Synthetic turf practice green.
- Improved opening hole.
- Short game practice facility and first tee box complex featuring 1,150m² of bent grass greens.
- 18-hole synthetic turf putting course spanning 2,200m².

Synthetic Turf Practice Green (completed Nov 2024)
The first phase of the project, the synthetic turf practice green was completed in November 2024 and covers a total area of 350m², including 210m² of putting surface. What makes this green truly unique is the innovative synthetic turf and underlay system used – a first for Australia. The green was designed with practice in mind and features various practice modules from famed short game guru, Dave Pelz, whilst still allowing novice golfers a fun and inviting green to play on without the worry of any damage to the surface.
The green was completed in collaboration with Synlawn and features the same turf and ShotStopper Pro underlay system found on the green at the new TGL (Tomorrow Golf League) in Florida, making it as realistic as a natural turf green, but without the same maintenance requirements. It has already proven to be a hit with club members and visitors, with the consistency and quality of the surface being the typical feedback.
Improved Opening Hole (under construction)
The first step in the works this year was the significant improvement to the club’s first hole. The team started by stripping the landing area and ridge line of the first hole’s fairway. This key move has opened up the views from the tee, giving golfers an unobstructed view of the green—a change that not only improves the aesthetics but with the addition of a new realigned and raised tee box also improves the playability of the hole. In a resourceful move, the cut materials were used to build the new short game practice area, the new first tee, and the 18-hole putting course. Players will now find the opening hole easier to approach, thanks to this alteration, making for a more enjoyable start to their round.

Short game practice area and First Tee (under construction)
The short game area consists of two bent grass greens, totaling 1,100m², warm-up nets, and wedge target greens by Dave Pelz. The two practice greens will be accompanied by a bunker and surrounded with different undulations and cuts of grass to mimic mid-round scenarios, and will be paired with a unique scorecard system developed by Himalayas Golf. This system divides the area into different zones to work on different aspects of the short game and will enable players and coaches to track progress, compete, and Practice With Purpose.
18-hole Putting Course (under construction)
The putting course has been designed with both playability and enjoyment in mind. Wide putting areas and undulating slopes aim to attract new golfers while still offering challenges and creative shot-making for seasoned players. One standout feature is the 7th hole, designed as a miniature replica of the club’s signature par-3 7th hole. There will also be large landscaped areas to break out the playing area and mimic the large landscaped areas found on the adjacent golf course. A large central ‘plaza’ area will also be a great opportunity for the club to host themed events or parties, whilst bar counters around the final hole will create a fun atmosphere for friends to watch each other close out their round.
Construction Status
The bulk earthworks have been completed for all phases, the first fairway has been reshaped and the sand layer has been reinstated, with the grass and irrigation being the last step of this area. The base of the short game greens has been shaped, with sand installation and final shaping outstanding, and the surrounds completed. Following this, the irrigation and grassing will be completed. Both these areas are expected to be open for members by the end of April or the beginning of May.
The putting course is commencing the installation of services and shaping of the holes. Following this, the landscaping and turf installation will be completed before its expected completion at the end of March.
