GolfWA Appoints Arron Minchin as New Chief Executive

POSTED ON December 19, 2025 @ 2:33 pm

The GolfWA Board has officially appointed Arron Minchin as its next Chief Executive, effective 1 January 2026. Minchin, an internal candidate who currently serves as the organisation’s Government Relations Manager, will succeed long-serving leader Gary Thomas.

The appointment follows an extensive recruitment process that saw over 60 high-quality candidates apply from across the country. The Board’s decision highlights a strategic focus on continuity and long-term sustainability for golf in Western Australia.

A Smooth Transition of Leadership

Outgoing Chief Executive Gary Thomas announced his decision to step down earlier this year after a transformative 15-year tenure. Thomas first joined the WA Golf Association (WAGA) as a Junior Development Officer and eventually returned as CEO in November 2010. Under his leadership, golf in the state has reached record participation and membership levels.

Minchin will begin his role following a handover period with Thomas, who will officially conclude his duties at the end of 2025.

Extensive Experience and Strategic Vision

Minchin brings more than 20 years of leadership experience spanning the business, government, and sporting sectors. His professional background includes:

  • Government Relations Manager at GolfWA: Working closely with Golf Australia and state clubs to advocate for environmental, economic, and community benefits.
  • Director of Community Services at the City of Karratha: Leading local government initiatives for over four years.
  • Senior Leadership Roles in State Government: Serving as Director of Industry Development and Participation at the Department of Sport and Recreation.
  • Private Sector Experience: Holding high-level positions at BHP and BCI Minerals.

Minchin is also a passionate golfer of 30 years, having been a member of six different country golf clubs across Western Australia.

Endorsement from Industry Leaders

GolfWA Chair Emma Elliott praised the appointment, noting that Minchin’s ability to build trusted relationships and demonstrate commercial leadership will be critical for the organisation’s future.

“Arron brings deep experience across government, sport, and industry… These strengths will be critical as GolfWA continues to grow its impact and support clubs and members across Western Australia.” — Emma Elliott, GolfWA Chair

Arron Minchin expressed his commitment to strengthening the game’s foundations. “I’ve seen first-hand the opportunity to strengthen the game by backing clubs, supporting facility investment, and growing participation pathways across the state,” Minchin said.

Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland also welcomed the move, emphasizing that Minchin is well-placed to maintain the current momentum of the sport in the region.
