Bega Country Club Proposes $5.4 Million Overhaul
The Bega Country Club has set its sights on a significant transformation, lodging a multi-million dollar development application (DA) with the Bega Valley Shire Council to revitalise its ageing facilities.
The proposal, estimated to cost $5,472,123, outlines a complete replacement of the existing clubhouse on Tarraganda Lane with a contemporary facility designed to better integrate with the region’s rural-residential aesthetic.
Modernising the Clubhouse
According to the DA, the club plans to swap its current structure for a “low-profile” building featuring modern materials and generous glazing. The new floor plan includes:
- A sports bar and an expansive external deck.
- Flexible function rooms and indoor dining areas.
- A pro shop, administration desk, and entry foyer.
“The redevelopment will revitalise an aging facility, improving accessibility, visual appeal, and operational efficiency while maintaining the site’s long-standing recreational use,” an environmental statement lodged with the DA states.
New Amenities and Infrastructure
Beyond the main building, the club aims to diversify its recreational offerings. While the existing squash courts will remain, the plans introduce a new bowling green to be situated directly in front of the clubhouse.
“It will have no adverse visual impact and will instead enhance the recreational offering of the club by providing an additional sporting facility,” the documents state. However, the addition will require minor layout adjustments to the existing golf course.
Infrastructure upgrades are also a priority. The current mix of sealed and dirt parking will be replaced with a formal, landscaped carpark featuring 60 marked spaces, including two accessible bays.
Environmental and Community Impact
The club has emphasised that the project is designed to be minimally invasive. Although portions of the club sit on Crown-leased land, all proposed works are confined to previously developed areas.
“Works are confined to previously developed areas… minimising environmental disturbance and preserving the established landscape character,” the DA notes.
Architectural plans highlight that the “well-proportioned verandas” and modern finishes are intended to improve the view for adjoining residential properties. Additionally, any new landscaping will utilise endemic species to maintain a cohesive green setting.
Looking Ahead
If the Bega Valley Shire Council (Application No. 10.2026.2.1) grants approval, the project will be executed in stages:
- Stage 1: Clubhouse rebuild (approx. 18 months).
- Stage 2: Bowling green construction (approx. 6 months).
The club, which recorded roughly 200 golf members for the 2024/25 financial year, expects to see “moderate growth” in membership following the completion of the works.
