Jack Newton explains where Aussie golf is going wrong, and how to fix it

POSTED ON July 15, 2014 @ 10:00 am

WHAT’S wrong with Aussie golf? A lot according to Aussie legend Jack Newton.

TIME FOR A RETHINK

Through superb consistent performances of Adam Scott, we have witnessed another Australian climb to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking. Scott’s ascension may give the impression that Australian golf is primed and ready for another golf boom, such as that led by Greg Norman a generation ago.

However, there are a number of impediments to the game in Australia. The handicap system is flawed; our junior programs are too focused on high-performance rather than

grassroots participation; we lack playing opportunities for aspiring young professionals; and there seems to be a lack of cohesion between the organisations that are tasked with

running the game. It’s led me to conclude we need an independent, authoritative report to help solve these and other lingering problems.
