Palmerston North sports club smashed by vandals
Vandals have struck a Palmerston North clubrooms, smashing windows and leaving a huge mess.
Damaged club
The clubrooms at Manawaroa Park, which house Freyberg Cricket Club, Rose Gardens Croquet Club, mahjong and a walkers’ club, were damaged on Tuesday night.
About a dozen windows have been smashed, chairs thrown around, beer stolen and milk poured on the floor.
The broken windows have been boarded up and most of the mess tidied, but there was still cleaning to be done.
Freyberg president Dave Fulton was disappointed with what had happened. He had been worried the club’s honours boards were damaged, but they were left untouched.
The club held its junior prize giving and Christmas party last Saturday, and were celebrating after the premier one team had won the one-day final, so were disappointed to have this incident to finish the year.
Nothing stolen
Fulton said there had been lots of items left at the clubrooms after the weekend but, fortunately, nothing had been stolen aside from the alcohol.
There were smashed bottles all over the place.
“They’ve thrown bottles on the ground, grabbed some milk out of the fridge, and that burst.”
Fulton said the club had suffered a couple of minor burglaries before, but nothing to this extent.
The club had told the police.
