Scott Honoured with Inaugural ‘Spirit of Golf’ Award Ahead of 101st Major
LIVERPOOL – On the eve of his 101st consecutive major appearance, veteran Australian golfer Adam Scott has been awarded a massive honor, named as the inaugural winner of The R&A’s prestigious Spirit of Golf Award.
The announcement came just hours before Scott was set to tee off at Royal Birkdale for the 154th Open Championship, capstoning a milestone week where the former World No. 1 also celebrated his 46th birthday.
The R&A, the custodians of the sport outside the United States and Mexico, created the accolade to recognize individuals who best represent “the values, behaviors, and traditions inherent to golf.” Scott was nominated above all his modern peers for the honor.
“As someone who has spent my entire life in the game of golf, it is so meaningful to be recognized for my impact on golf across the world,” Scott said. “Not only from a playing point of view, but also for upholding values which are so integral to the sport.”
Joining the Legends
The award follows hot on the heels of Scott’s historic milestone at last month’s U.S. Open, where he joined legendary Jack Nicklaus as the only players in golf history to feature in 100 consecutive major championships.
Now, as he steps into uncharted territory with major number 101, Australia’s only Masters champion is eager to shift the conversation back to the scoreboard.
“Coming in here, it’s a fresh start,” Scott said ahead of his opening-round pairing with Americans Sam Burns and Chris Gotterup. “We can move beyond 100 now and it’s not going to be a story for a long while.”
