Royal Fremantle appoint course designer for upgrades

POSTED ON November 12, 2013 @ 10:00 am

The Royal Fremantle Golf Club (RFGC) has appointed Richard Chamberlain Golf Design
(RCGD) to design and administer adjustments of the golf course as a result of planned road
widening of the adjacent Leach Highway.
The RFGC is the oldest eighteen hole golf course in Western Australia and obtained its
“Royal” status in 1930. The impending alterations to the golf course will be the most
significant since the 1960’s when the Club gifted the area of land which then included the 16th
and 17th holes that ran down to Montreal Street to the Fremantle City Council. This was done
they could develop a nine hole public course.
Whilst the reduction in land size of the golf course will provide a short term hindrance to the
club and its members, it views this project as an opportunity to re-create some exciting,
strategic golf holes that will seamlessly blend in with the existing layout.
Whilst the extent of the golf course alterations will become evident over time RCGD are
anxious to commence work in the coming weeks and looks forward to working with such a
proud and traditional golf club in Western Australia.
With twenty-five years’ experience in the golf course design industry RCGD envisages
tremendous potential with this site and looks to strengthen its reputation as one of the most
innovative and exciting young design firms in Australia.
Initial conceptual discussions will commence immediately and will incorporate opinions from
both the RFGC and Main Roads Department. Construction of the revised golf holes is
anticipated to commence in 2014 with the road resumption works earmarked for early 2015.
