Gibbston Valley winery revive old plans to build resort with 18-hole golf course

A Central Otago winery is resurrecting old plans to build a resort – complete with its own village, day spa, and 18-hole golf course – after its business was hit hard during the recession.

Gibbston Valley, on the outskirts of Queenstown, is investing tens of millions of dollars in a 150-unit resort that will sit on about 40 hectares of land next to the winery

When complete, it will be one of the biggest winery developments in the country, including 150 units, 13 residential units, a spa, and a business village, which would be known as the Vintner’s Village, he said.

“That will be where you go in and there will be restaurants and artisan activities and all of the things you’d expect to find in a resort.”

There will also be an 18-hole golf course, designed by New Zealand golfing professional Greg Turner.

“The resort has to reflect its location. The buildings, the materials, the colours, will reflect Central Otago, we are not going to put something there that is out of place,” Hunt said.

“It’s not going to be a exclusive gated thing at all, in fact the village will all be open to the public.”

Plans for the resort are still in the early stages, so it is unclear when construction will begin.
