Ausplay releases state of golf participation and engagement report

POSTED ON May 8, 2019 @ 3:03 pm

Earlier this week a golf focused report on driving participation and engagement was released. The AusPlay Survey (AusPlay) is a large scale national population tracking survey funded and led by Sport Australia.

The State of Play Report has been designed to deliver a single sport snapshot, to help identify trends and opportunities to maximise participation and engagement.

The nationwide AusPlay survey has been running since October 2015, using Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI).

The report found the annual population estimate for adults 15+ participating in golf was 986,479, and was heavily skewed towards males which accounted for 81% of participation.

The report also revealed an annual sum of  $985+ million spent on Adult 15+ golf participation.
Median annual spend was $730 per adult participant.

The dominant motivation to participate in golf was ‘fun/enjoyment’ (58%), ‘social reasons’ (46%), and ‘Physical health/fitness’ (33%).

The report concluded that, in spite of an overall downward trend in participation over the last three years, net growth market opportunity is fairly healthy as there are many adults, considering taking up golf.
