NSW Virtual Open – Australia’s First State-Backed Simulator Golf Tournament
Golf NSW has announced the launch of the NSW Virtual Open, the first state-backed virtual golf tournament run by an official representative body in Australia — marking a significant milestone in the evolution of competitive golf.
This new event taps into the growing momentum of golf simulators and indoor golf venues, offering players from across New South Wales and the ACT a chance to qualify for both the 2025 Ford NSW Open and its Pro-Am.
A New Pathway to the Big Stage
Throughout August and September, affiliated golf clubs and industry venues with simulator facilities will host local qualifying events. Winners will then progress to the state finals at GolfSpace, Alexandria, in October, where spots in the 2025 Ford NSW Open at The Vintage Golf Club (13–16 November) and its Pro-Am will be on the line.
“Simulator golf is a significant part of the sport’s growth and attracts a participant base never seen before in golf’s long history,” said Olivia Wilson, General Manager – Golf, Golf NSW. “The NSW Virtual Open represents our commitment to innovation, accessibility, and new pathways for participation.”
Two Competition Pathways
- NSW Open Qualifying – For elite amateurs and PGA professionals, competing without handicap for a direct place in the 2025 Ford NSW Open. Venues can set their own formats, including single rounds, multi-round best scores, or weekly qualifiers.
- Pro-Am Qualifying – For amateur golfers of all skill levels, using handicaps in team formats such as three-person Ambrose, Best Ball, or Texas Scramble. Winners earn a spot in the Ford NSW Open Pro-Am.
Why It Matters for Industry Operators
The NSW Virtual Open isn’t just about player opportunities — it’s a business opportunity for golf facilities. Participating venues will receive:
- Increased foot traffic and participation
- Statewide marketing support from Golf NSW
- Elevated profile within the golf community
- Potential for membership growth and new revenue streams
By blending traditional tournament prestige with cutting-edge simulator technology, Golf NSW is positioning the event as a model for modern engagement.
“This format removes traditional barriers to tournament participation, while keeping the competitive spirit that makes golf so compelling,” Ms Wilson said.
