JOB: Golf Course Superintendent – Royal Fremantle Golf Club
The Club
Located just 25 minutes from the Perth CBD and 5 minutes from Fremantle, Royal Fremantle Golf Club is one of Western Australia’s premier sporting clubs, boasting a championship golf course and outstanding member facilities.
Since its establishment in 1905, the Club and has hosted numerous State and National Amateur golf events and more recently, the WEBEX Players Series, which forms part of the PGA and WPGA Tour of Australasia.
The Par-72, 18-hole course features 34 hectares of irrigated turf, including bent grass greens (pure distinction & penncross), kikuyu fairways and a mixture of santa ana couch and kikuyu tees.
The Club is in an exciting period of development, with ongoing greens and tee replacement, recent construction of a state-of-the-art course maintenance facility and Clubhouse refurbishment project in the planning stages. The Club boasts a membership base of over 1400 members and is renowned for being the home Club for some of Western Australia finest professional and amateur golfers.
The Opportunity
We seek an experienced, passionate and driven Golf Course Superintendent to lead our Course Maintenance team.
Reporting to the General Manager, the Course Superintendent will oversee all aspects of golf course maintenance, ensuring the highest possible standard of course presentation for members on a consistent basis. The Course Superintendent will contribute strategically also, working with the General Manager, Board of Directors and appointed architect to shape future development of the course, through a course masterplan.
This is a hands-on leadership role that combines operational planning with strategic input, while also showcasing the course through high-profile, televised professional and amateur events.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver all turf management, landscaping, irrigation and equipment programs on time, within a $2m budget and to a high standard
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 12 staff, including recruitment, training, and performance management
- Plan and deliver an annual works program, balancing day-to-day maintenance with annual rounds of 60,000+
- Ensure compliance with WHS, environmental regulations and equipment safety standards
- Manage irrigation systems and implement sustainable water usage strategies
- Oversee equipment servicing, maintenance and safe operation of course machinery
- Work within budget guidelines, contributing to cost control, procurement and reporting
- Collaborate with suppliers, stakeholders and Club departments to ensure seamless operations and event delivery
- Maintain accurate operational records and drive continuous improvement in processes and procedures
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
To be successful in this role, you will need to:
- Have a recognised qualification in turf management, with at least 5 years’ experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent
- Must have a demonstrated track record of managing a top-level golf course to consistently high standards.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of agronomy, turf management and commercial irrigation systems
- Proven effective leadership with ability to motivate and manage a team
- Show excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities
- Experience in budgeting, resource management, and project delivery
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective relationships with staff, stakeholders and relevant associations
- Understand contemporary land management issues as they relate to golf courses
- A high degree of administrative and executive ability
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Commitment to ongoing professional development through courses, workshops and industry events
- A collaborative approach, working closely with management, staff and volunteers
